A well-prepared lot of scrap makes the survey, quotation and collection faster, and limits deductions for contamination. Here is what businesses and workshops should do before contacting a scrap buyer.

1. Do a rough sort by metal#

Keep copper, brass, aluminium, stainless steel, electric cable and so on apart. Each has its own price; mixed together they are hard to value accurately and take extra time to sort at collection. If you are not sure how to separate them, see how to tell scrap copper grades apart.

2. Remove contaminants#

Strip plastic insulation where you can; remove iron, rubber and lugs; let turnings drain of cutting oil and coolant. The cleaner the scrap, the higher the metal recovery and the closer the price to its real value.

3. Take photos and estimate the weight#

Photograph the whole lot and each type close up, ideally with something in the frame for scale. An estimated weight (in kg or tonnes) lets the buyer give a preliminary quote and send the right vehicles and crew.

Clear photos and an estimated weight are usually enough for a preliminary quote before an on-site survey.

4. Prepare the space and vehicle access#

On-site collection needs room for trucks and crane trucks to get in, and an area for weighing. Let the buyer know your working hours and the plant's access rules in advance so the collection is not interrupted.

5. Agree on weighing and payment#

Before the collection day, ask how the scrap will be weighed, how you will be paid (cash or bank transfer) and which documents are needed, so the deal is transparent and quick.
